The first chapter lists Oz’s Top 40 wines of the year and Chile takes pride of place with the Viña Falernia Elqui Valley Syrah 2005 listed as his number one wine. Very bright colour; Interesting elegant nose with black pepper notes. Intense and complex fruitiness. Upfront, juicy and fruit driven but still precise and with balance. Medium - full bodied with very soft tannins and good balance. The grapes were hand-picked. The wine was aged in French barriques for 8 months. Falernia winery is located in the Elqui Valley near the small town of La Serena, 300 miles north of Santiago and it is at the present , Chile's northermost wine estate. The climate is semiarid with a dramatic contrast between day and night time temperature during the ripening season.
